Since 2017, Manipur's government has destroyed over 19,000 acres of illegal poppy cultivation across 12 districts, with the highest destruction in Kangpokpi, Ukhrul, and Churachandpur. The area under illegal poppy cultivation in nine districts decreased by 60% between 2021 and 2023. The chief minister reaffirmed the commitment to eradicating this illicit activity, which has contributed to environmental issues like soil erosion and loss of biodiversity.
