Australian researchers are developing plants for space missions that could also boost Earth's agriculture.

The University of Adelaide's ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space is developing sustainable plant production techniques for astronauts on long-duration space missions, like the three-year trip to Mars. The research could also benefit Earth's agriculture, particularly in tough environments. The center is focusing on crops like duckweed, which grows rapidly and is highly nutritious, and optimizing other plants like lettuce, tomatoes, and strawberries for contained environments. Funded with $35 million from the federal government and additional support, the project aims to engage 400 students and send plant material to the Moon in 2026.
