Volunteers build over 80 nest boxes to help save the nearly extinct Western Purple Martin.

Volunteers from Nature Nanaimo have built over 80 new nest boxes to help save the Western Purple Martin, a species nearly extinct due to competition with invasive species like starlings and sparrows. The birds, crucial for controlling insects, now rely entirely on these artificial nests, with about 800 boxes in use on Vancouver Island. The Georgia Basin Ecological Assessment and Restoration Society leads the effort, providing guidelines for building and monitoring the boxes, which need replacement every 20 to 40 years.
