Health insurers in Australia agree to pay nearly double in hospital fees, avoiding new taxes.

Australia's largest private health insurers have agreed to pay $140 million more in hospital fees starting January 1, nearly doubling their payments to the NSW gazetted single-room rate of $892 per day. This agreement follows months of negotiations with the NSW government and avoids the need for new taxes on insurers. Previously, insurers opted for a lower federal shared-bed rate, causing a loss for taxpayers.
