Australia's federal parliament has granted the immigration minister the power to pay other countries to take in individuals in detention, following a High Court ruling that indefinite detention is illegal. Immigration Minister Tony Burke has ruled out mass deportations, stating the powers are for a small number of people refusing to leave voluntarily. A ban on mobile phones in detention centers also passed, raising concerns about potential human rights abuses going unreported.
