Assam's Chief Minister offers to ban beef in response to allegations of its use in election tactics.

Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has offered to ban beef in the state if the Congress party officially requests it. This proposal comes amid allegations that the BJP distributed beef to win a recent election in the Muslim-majority Samaguri constituency. Sarma suggested that a ban could help unify religious communities. The consumption of beef is not illegal in Assam, but the 2021 Assam Cattle Preservation Act prohibits cattle slaughter and beef sale in certain areas.
