India screens over 4.75 crore people for sickle cell anemia, diagnosing nearly 1.8 million.

Around 4.75 crore people, including 1.98 crore tribal individuals, have been screened for sickle cell anemia (SCA) across 17 states in India since the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM) launched in July 2023. About 1.8 million people were diagnosed with SCA, while 12.54 lakh were identified as carriers. The mission offers comprehensive healthcare services, including counselling, nutritional support, and access to hydroxyurea medication, to improve the quality of life for those affected.
