A 4,000-year-old fish trap system spanning 42 square kilometers has been discovered in Belize's largest inland wetland, predating the Maya civilization. Built by Late Archaic hunter-gatherer-fisher groups, the network of canals and ponds could catch enough fish to feed 15,000 people annually. This discovery suggests the Maya civilization may have initially relied on fish rather than maize for sustenance.
