UK court nullifies over 28,000 rail fare evasion prosecutions due to improper procedure use.

Over 28,000 rail fare evasion prosecutions by Northern Rail and 41 by TransPennine Express have been declared null and void by a UK court. The court ruled the companies improperly used the Single Justice Procedure (SJP) for fare evasion cases, which is not allowed under the Regulation of Railways Act 1889. The affected passengers will be contacted by the Courts and Tribunals Service, and the government plans to review the SJP and regulation of private prosecutors.
