Sydney's Merivale to pay $19.25M to settle underpayment claims by nearly 2,900 employees.

Sydney's hospitality company Merivale, owned by Justin Hemmes, will pay $19.25 million to settle a lawsuit alleging underpayment of former employees. Employees claimed they were paid for a 38-hour week but worked 50 hours without overtime, violating the Fair Work Act. Merivale denies underpayment and the settlement does not admit liability. An administrator will oversee the payout, with $6.3 million going to the lawsuit's backers. Nearly 2,900 registered employees will receive letters detailing their estimated payouts.
