Ontario expands nurse practitioners' roles to include advanced medical procedures starting July 2025.

Ontario will allow nurse practitioners to apply defibrillators, cardiac pacemakers, and perform electrocoagulation starting July 2025, aiming to improve healthcare access in rural, northern, and Indigenous areas. Registered nurses will also be able to certify expected deaths, while nurse practitioners can certify deaths in more situations. Health Minister Sylvia Jones and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario support these changes to enhance timely care.
