New Zealand's mining sector generated nearly NZ$242 million in royalties in the 2023/24 financial year, mainly from petroleum and gold. Spending on prospecting and exploration rose to NZ$91.3 million. The government is working on a Minerals Strategy to boost mineral development, including reversing the petroleum exploration ban, to create jobs, enhance energy security, and drive economic recovery.
