Canadian government's support for Nisga'a in land dispute alarms Gitanyow and UBCIC.

The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) is alarmed by the Canadian and B.C. governments' support for the Nisga'a Nation in a land dispute with the Gitanyow Nation. The Gitanyow are seeking Aboriginal rights over a 6,200-square-kilometer area in northwestern B.C., which the Nisga'a claim overlaps with their treaty lands. Despite previous court denials, the government's backing of the Nisga'a's legal bid could prolong the case and increase costs for the Gitanyow, according to the UBCIC.
