Australia passes reforms to curb airline misuse of Sydney Airport slots, aiming to boost competition and increase flight capacity.

Australia's federal parliament has passed reforms to tackle airline misuse of flight slots at Sydney Airport, imposing fines of up to $99,000 for improper use. The federal transport department will now oversee slot allocation and can force airlines to provide information about misuse. The reforms aim to increase competition and allow for up to 85 flights per hour during bad weather, from the usual 80. This follows allegations that major airlines like Qantas and Virgin were deliberately canceling flights to maintain their slots.
