Since December 2000, India has collected Rs 1.44 lakh crore in toll taxes from National Highways under the Public-Private Partnership model, according to Minister Nitin Gadkari.
The tolls follow the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008.
The government is moving towards barrier-free electronic tolling with FASTag and plans to introduce GNSS-based tolling, which would charge based on distance travelled.
