Eskom completes prepaid meter upgrade for 5.5 million South African customers, targeting remaining non-payers.

Eskom, South Africa's electricity provider, has completed its prepaid meter upgrade project, converting 5.5 million customers to the new system. About 400,000 "zero buyers" who previously did not pay for electricity have become paying customers, increasing Eskom's base to 7.25 million. However, 1.7 million zero buyers are still urged to update their meters by December 13, 2024, to avoid electricity disruptions. Those using illegal connections can regularize their situation by paying a fine of R6,000.
