Col. Steve McCraw, Texas DPS director for 15 years, retires, praised for enhancing safety and modernizing the agency.

After 15 years as director, Col. Steve McCraw is retiring from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) on November 30. Governor Greg Abbott praised McCraw's leadership and integrity, highlighting his role in enhancing safety and modernizing DPS, including a shift to a regional command structure, increased pay for officers, and acquiring advanced equipment. Over 3,144 recruits joined the Texas Highway Patrol under McCraw's leadership. Lt. Col. Freeman Martin will succeed him on December 1.
