U.S. Thanksgiving food waste hits 316 million pounds, causing significant environmental impact.

Americans will waste 316 million pounds of food on Thanksgiving, valued at about $500 million. This waste contributes to climate change, releasing methane that results in greenhouse gas emissions nearly five times greater than those from the aviation industry. Globally, one-third of all food produced is wasted annually, totaling over a billion tons. The United Nations estimates that up to 10% of all human-produced greenhouse gases come from food waste.
