Edmonton police detective Michael Bates, a 17-year veteran previously honored for saving a downed aviator, has been charged with assault following an incident on January 20 at a downtown LRT station. The Edmonton Police Service initiated an internal complaint in March, and a formal investigation began in April. Prosecutors recommended the assault charge in August. Bates remains on duty but in a non-patrol role. The EPS cannot comment further due to the ongoing court case.
