Global HIV infections dropped 22% since 2010, but the world falls short of 2030 targets.

A recent study in The Lancet HIV shows a 22% drop in new HIV infections and a 40% reduction in HIV-related deaths globally since 2010. Sub-Saharan Africa led in reducing new infections by 60% since 1995, but infections are rising in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The study warns that the world is not on track to meet UNAIDS 2030 targets, with only about 75% of HIV-positive individuals on treatment. The number of people living with HIV is expected to peak at 44.4 million by 2039 before declining.
