Africa's IDP crisis triples, with conflict and climate change displacing 35 million people.

Africa's number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has tripled over the past 15 years, reaching 35 million by the end of last year. This accounts for nearly half of the world's IDPs. Conflict and violence are the main causes, affecting 32.5 million people, with the majority in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Somalia, and Sudan. Disaster-induced displacement, especially from floods, has also increased sixfold since 2009. The African Union's Kampala Convention aims to protect IDPs, but governments struggle to combat rising conflicts and disasters exacerbated by climate change.
