USDA restricts imports from Mexico after detection of livestock-threatening New World screwworm.

Mexico alerted the USDA on Nov. 22, 2024, of New World screwworm (NWS) detection in a Chiapas cow. NWS, fly larvae that infect warm-blooded animals, pose a threat to livestock. In response, USDA's APHIS restricted imports of animal products from Mexico and is working with Mexican and Central American partners to prevent NWS spread into the U.S. APHIS has also strengthened surveillance and cooperation to manage the risk of re-introduction of NWS into the U.S.
