Rhode Island sees a surge in food insecurity, with 38% of households now lacking reliable access to food.

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank reports that 38% of households in Rhode Island are now food insecure, up from 29% last year. This is the highest rate since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Communities of color face higher rates of food insecurity. The food bank attributes the rise to increased living costs like rent and childcare. Currently, the food bank serves a record 84,400 people monthly, a 9% increase year-over-year. The report suggests improving SNAP benefits and maintaining state funding to address the issue.
