In the past 12 years, deaths of pedestrians and cyclists on US roads have nearly doubled, rising 83% since 2009, according to research by Nick Ferenchak at the University of New Mexico. While car fatalities have decreased, pedestrian deaths, especially at night, have surged. Ferenchak's Center for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety aims to identify engineering solutions for city planners, noting that pedestrians lack strong advocacy networks compared to cyclists.
