Astronomers detect highest-energy cosmic-ray particles, hinting at nearby celestial sources.

Astronomers using the H.E.S.S. Observatory in Namibia have detected the most energetic cosmic-ray electrons and positrons ever recorded, with energies up to 40 teraelectronvolts. These high-energy particles likely originate from nearby sources within a few thousand light-years, possibly from pulsars or other dense celestial objects. The sharp drop in energy beyond one teraelectronvolt suggests a limited number of sources.
