South African writer and poet Breyten Breytenbach, a vocal opponent of apartheid, died at 85 in Paris. Known for his literary works in Afrikaans and English, which explored themes like exile and identity, Breytenbach spent seven years in prison for treason in the 1970s. A member of the African National Congress's Okhela wing, he authored around 50 books and received France's top cultural award. Breytenbach is survived by his wife, daughter, and two grandsons.
