Japanese libraries to trial book sales starting 2025, targeting elderly less adept at online shopping.

In response to the decline in physical bookstores, Japanese public libraries will trial book sales starting fiscal 2025. This initiative aims to provide more book purchasing opportunities, especially for the elderly who may be unfamiliar with online shopping. TRC Library Service Inc. and Nippon Shuppan Hanbai Inc. will run the trial with separate counters for purchases and lending. The program may expand if there is strong demand, as the number of bookstores in Japan has decreased due to a falling population and rising online sales.
