South Carolina begins its first veterinary school to tackle a severe shortage of veterinarians.

South Carolina broke ground on its first veterinary school at Clemson University, addressing a severe shortage of veterinarians. The state has one vet per 2,053 animals, with many counties having fewer than five vets. The $250 million Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine will start classes in 2026, aiming to graduate its first class by 2030. This initiative hopes to reduce the need for students to leave the state for education and support the agricultural industry.
