Tata Steel replaces fossil fuels with biochar at Jamshedpur plant, cutting CO2 emissions by 50,000 tonnes annually.

Tata Steel has successfully replaced 30,000 tonnes of fossil fuels with biochar at its Jamshedpur plant, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 50,000 tonnes annually. Biochar, a biomass-based charcoal, is used in blast furnaces to improve energy efficiency. The company aims to extend this process to other sites and is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045. Additionally, an IIT Dhanbad partnership with sentra.world seeks to decarbonize steel production further through research on biochar.
