Study: Global shipping routes overlap with 92% of whale habitats, risking fatal collisions; expanding protections could help.

A new study finds that global shipping overlaps with 92% of the ranges of blue, fin, humpback, and sperm whales, putting thousands at risk of fatal collisions. Only 7% of high-risk areas have protective measures, but expanding these to just 2.6% more of the ocean's surface could cover all critical hotspots identified, including areas along the Mediterranean, Americas, southern Africa, and East Asia. Implementing such measures could also reduce noise pollution and improve fuel efficiency.
