Nebraska faith group pushes for pretrial reforms to reduce jail population, faces resistance.

An interfaith group in Lincoln, Nebraska, called Justice in Action, is advocating for the expansion of pretrial diversion programs to help reduce the jail population, especially for nonviolent offenders. The group, representing 26 faith communities, met with County Attorney Pat Condon but claims he rejected their proposals. They argue that over 70% of those in jail are awaiting trial and face challenges like addiction and mental health issues. The coalition aims to prevent detention based on poverty and to address disparities in the current system.
