MLB plans to test robot umpires using an automated ball-strike challenge system in 2025 spring training.
Major League Baseball (MLB) will test robot umpires using an automated ball-strike (ABS) challenge system during spring training in 2025 at 13 ballparks hosting 19 teams, with plans to implement the technology in the 2026 regular season if successful. Human umpires will call balls and strikes, but teams will have a limited number of challenges using Hawk-Eye cameras. The system's roll-out depends on feedback from clubs and players and an agreement with the Umpires Association.
