Indian Supreme Court to rule on whether "socialist" and "secular" should remain in the Constitution’s Preamble.

The Supreme Court of India has reserved its verdict on petitions challenging the inclusion of "socialist" and "secular" in the Constitution's Preamble, added by the 1976 42nd amendment under Indira Gandhi's government. The court, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, noted that socialism in India implies a welfare state, and secularism is part of the Constitution's basic structure. The court will pronounce its order on November 25.
