DOJ finds Trenton Police guilty of misconduct, including excessive force and unlawful stops.

The U.S. Justice Department has found the Trenton Police Department in New Jersey guilty of a pattern of misconduct, including excessive force, unlawful stops, and unnecessary use of pepper spray. A year-long investigation, which led to a 45-page report, revealed arrests without legal basis and violations of the Fourth Amendment. The investigation was triggered by an officer shooting a young Black man, who tried to drive away without knowing the reason for the stop. The report recommends over two dozen changes to improve training, accountability, and data collection.
