Bulgaria and Romania may join the Schengen border-free zone by January 2025, EU officials say.

Bulgaria and Romania may become full members of the Schengen travel zone by January 2025, according to Hungarian officials. The countries joined the EU in 2007 but were not integrated into the borderless Schengen area until March, when border checks for maritime and air travel were lifted. Land border checks persisted due to Austria's concerns about illegal migration, but after a meeting of interior ministers, Austria lifted its opposition. The final decision will be made by EU interior ministers in December.
