Auckland's buses to get safety screens for drivers by 2026 amid rise in assaults.

Auckland's buses will get full-length safety screens for drivers by 2026, with 80% of the fleet, about 1,100 buses, to be equipped as part of a $15 million government initiative. This move follows an increase in assaults on drivers, with 33 reported incidents in the first half of 2024, up from 21 in the same period the previous year. The New Zealand Transport Agency is also considering funding for driver toilet facilities and an on-board live CCTV trial for 30 buses.
