UK tax authority nearly doubles payouts to whistleblowers amid surge in tips about tax evasion.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) nearly doubled payouts to tax whistleblowers to nearly £1 million in 2023/24, up from £508,500 the previous year. This follows 151,763 anonymous tips about tax evasion, the second highest in seven years. The UK aims to reduce its £39.8 billion tax gap, but experts suggest even larger rewards could encourage more reports, noting the US pays out significantly more to whistleblowers.
