Percival Everett won the National Book Award for fiction with "James," a retelling of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" from the perspective of Jim, the enslaved character. Jason De León won for nonfiction with "Soldiers and Kings," while Shifa Saltagi Safadi, Lena Khalaf Tuffaha, and Yàng Shu also won in young people's literature, poetry, and translation categories. Each winner received $10,000. The awards ceremony took place at Cipriani Wall Street, marking the 75th anniversary.
