European new car sales edged up in October, driven by strong hybrid and electric vehicle growth.

In October, European new car registrations increased by 1.1%, with strong growth in Spain and Germany offsetting declines in France and Italy. Electric and hybrid vehicle sales surged, with hybrids up 17.5% and battery electrics up 2.4%. Total registrations from January to October rose 0.7% to 8.9 million units. However, diesel and petrol car sales dropped by 7.6% and 6.8% respectively. European automakers face challenges from high costs, shifting to electric vehicles, and competition from China.
