Emily Carr painting bought for $50 sells for $290,000 at Toronto auction.

An Emily Carr painting, "Masset, Q.C.I.," bought for $50 at a New York barn sale, sold for $290,000 at a Toronto auction. The 1912 painting depicts a carved grizzly bear on a totem pole in British Columbia and was part of Carr's efforts to document First Nations art. Believed to have been a gift to Carr's friend in the 1930s, the painting exceeded its presale estimate of $100,000 to $200,000.
