Rare 1870 $20 gold coin sells for $1.44 million, a significant increase from its $23,100 sale in 1986.
A rare 1870 $20 gold "double eagle" coin, one of only 3,789 produced, sold for $1.44 million at a California auction. Only 40 to 50 of these coins are believed to exist. Last sold in 1986 for $23,100, its value surged, likely due to increased hobby investing during the pandemic. The coin, from the Bernard Richards collection, is the finest known example of its kind.
