Indian authorities seize over Rs 1,082 crore in cash and illegal goods ahead of key state elections.

Authorities in India have seized over Rs 1,082 crore worth of cash, liquor, drugs, and freebies ahead of the Maharashtra and Jharkhand state elections. This is seven times more than seizures made in 2019. In Maharashtra, significant cash seizures include Rs 1.98 crore from a Nashik hotel and Rs 2.5 crore from a Navi Mumbai residence. The elections are highly contested between the BJP-led Mahayuti and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, with 288 seats at stake. The Election Commission has intensified efforts to curb money power in these elections.
