Wales exits UK-wide recycling scheme for beverage containers, citing legal and material concerns.

The Welsh Government has withdrawn from a UK-wide deposit return scheme (DRS) for beverage containers, citing issues with the UK Internal Market Act 2020 and concerns over including glass bottles. The scheme, to start in October 2027, involved England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Wales will now develop its own DRS, aiming to support a circular economy and promote reuse over recycling. The Association of Convenience Stores expressed concern that the separate scheme could cause confusion.
