U.S. higher education sees record international students, but new enrollments drop due to various factors.

The number of international students in U.S. higher education institutions reached an all-time high of over 1.1 million in the 2023-2024 academic year, marking a 7% increase from the previous year. India has surpassed China as the top sender of international students, with 331,602 Indian students in the U.S., a 23% increase. International students contribute over $50 billion to the U.S. economy annually and account for 6% of the total higher education population. Despite this growth, new enrollment figures for the 2024-2025 academic year show a 5% decline, attributed to factors including immigration policies, campus safety concerns, and rising costs.
