Two wildfires in North Dakota, sparked by natural gas flares at oil wells on October 5, destroyed 14 square miles and damaged land and livestock, but no injuries were reported. Flaring, a common practice to burn off excess gas during oil extraction, is legal but the state fire marshal's office cannot issue penalties. ConocoPhillips and Hess Corp., which operate the wells, are reviewing the incident.
