He was celebrated for his expertise on Hindu and Muslim Sufi cultures, and his work revolutionized the study of Indian art, particularly through his research on 18th-century Pahari painters. Goswamy's writings and collaborations, including his column 'Art & Soul' in The Tribune and work at Switzerland's Museum Rietberg, highlighted the essence of Indian art, emphasizing the social context and the role of artistic families. His 1986 exhibition 'Essence of Indian Art' showcased this approach, while his book on Nainsukh of Guler and his 1968 article in Marg redefined Indian art history.
