Michigan's drug overdose deaths fell in 2023, but Berrien County saw opioid deaths stabilize.

Drug overdose deaths in Michigan dropped by 5.7% in 2023, according to health officials, but Berrien County saw no change. Despite this, opioid-related deaths in Berrien County decreased from 86% to 67% of total overdose deaths. Health Officer Guy Miller credits the decline to increased availability of naloxone, an overdose-blocking drug, available for free at nine locations in the county.
