California plans to rename over 30 sites containing the slur "squaw" by January 1, 2024.

California plans to rename over 30 geographic sites and places containing the derogatory term "squaw," a racist slur for Native American women. This follows a 2022 law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom that bans the term in future place names and mandates renaming existing sites. The California Natural Resources Agency will implement new names, selected in consultation with Native American tribes, by January 1. One example is a street in West Sacramento being renamed "tebti," meaning "streams that flow together."
