African Union completes troop withdrawal in Somalia, transitioning to new mission AUSSOM.

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has completed Phase Three of its troop drawdown, reducing its forces by 2,000 soldiers and handing over the final military base in Burgavo to the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF). Since 2023, ATMIS has withdrawn 9,000 troops and transferred 21 bases, reflecting Somalia's growing security capacity. A new mission, AUSSOM, will replace ATMIS in January 2025.
