UK to mandate folic acid in flour from 2026 to reduce birth defects, save NHS money.

Starting late 2026, the UK will require folic acid in non-wholemeal wheat flour to prevent neural tube defects like spina bifida. This move aims to save the NHS £20 million over ten years and could prevent about 200 cases of birth defects annually. Folic acid, vital for red blood cell and new cell production, will help women maintain adequate vitamin B9 levels, especially in unplanned pregnancies.
